Hudo to Undergo Overhaul in Charlotte, NC
Heidi had been enjoying her trip down the East Coast of the US. As one might expect from an octagenarian on an around-the-world-voyage, Hudo has had some issues. In Wilmington NC, Hudo experienced technical difficulties. Though the preliminary diagnosis was a thrown rod, upon disassembly it appeared that Hudo re-ingested a piston ring. Looking at the pictures, the engineering team at Mongolope.com found the damage to be unusual because how did the piston ring get above the cylinder wall to cause so much damage?
Hudo was reassembled and according to the Instagram posts, failed his shakedown drive. Further inspection showed damage to the connecting rod journals. Loose journal bearings could allow the piston to transit out of the cyclinder at TDC and catch a ring on the edge on the way down. Based on the new findings, Mongolope.com’s engineering division is glad that Heidi is investing in an overhaul of Hudo’s crankshaft and journal bearings before they continue their journey.
However, Hudo only had 15,000 miles since the overhaul in Germany. Heidi feels the short life on the engine calls into question the quality of the “overhaul” Hudo received in Germany. Regardless, Hudo and Heidi cannot continue without the bottom end of the engine being reworked. So Hudo has been loaded into a trailer for transport to Charlotte NC. Heidi is now very grateful to be piloting a loaner MG around Charlotte while she awaits the completion of Hudo’s rebuild. Since Charlotte is home to the Charlotte Motor Speedway, we hope Hudo will be able to find the very best of care in the “Queen City”. We wish Heidi and Hudo a speedy recovery from this delay, and all the best on the rest of their journey.

Hudo Decides to Linger a while in Wilmington NC
Heidi had been enjoying her trip down the East Coast of the US. As one might expect from an octagenarian on an around-the-world-voyage, Hudo has had some issues. In Wilmington NC, Hudo has experienced technical difficulties. We have found a re-enactment of the event on youtube. (Click HERE to see the 9 second clip.) Though the preliminary diagnosis was a thrown rod, upon disassembly it appears that Hudo re-ingested a piston ring. According to the instagram posts, parts are on the way from California. (Note: Some inaccuracies in the above summary may be due to my poor skills at translating German.) We wish Heidi and Hudo a speedy recovery from this delay, and all the best on the rest of their journey.
Heidi’s March through the South Continues
Heidi has been enjoying her trip down the East Coast of the US. As of October 27, 2015, she is in Raleigh, NC. She has visited numerous car shows and even a dog show. Here is a picture of Heidi and her canine soul-sister.
And at a recent car show, Hudo found his evil alter-ego. Click on Hudo’s picture to see the “Anti-Hudo”.
The Greatest City in the World
Despite the accident with her and hand and all the mechanical issues with Hudo, Heidi has made it to New York City. She has driven from Berlin to NYC by going East, which is quite an accomplishment in itself. Not to mention that a lot of people would consider just visiting NYC as an adventure worthy of the bucket list. However, Heidi is still on her adventure to drive around the world. Best of luck to her, and enjoy the pizza.

Around the World in a 1930 Sedan
Dad was thundering around a corner in West Seattle on a training run, when he noticed an unusual automobile parked in the driveway of one of the homes along the street. Though Dad is an accomplished foot racer, and very dedicated to his training, but just like Mongo, he is also known for almost never passing up the opportunity for a quick break from his cardio training to investigate something unusual along his route.
Here was a 1930’s sedan with all kinds of custom paint along its sides. This was just too good to pass up. Dad stopped and looked it over, particularly since Dad really enjoys unique old automobiles. (Click HERE to see pictures from Dad’s recent visit to the Port Orchard car show.)
The name of the driver on the car was Heidi Hetzer. The car itself appeared to be christened “Hudo”. Dad made a note to look into this mystery further on the internet. Read More…
